PALM BAY, FL — An 18-year-old Florida woman is recovering after a violent crash in Brevard County left her with a broken back, emergency stomach surgery and time in the intensive care unit.
The collision happened last Saturday near St. Johns Heritage Parkway and Pace when, according to her mother, a black truck lost control, fishtailed and struck the family’s vehicle. The impact crushed the car and damaged a nearby fence.
Palm Bay police cited the driver for reckless driving, but no criminal charges have been filed. Police have not identified the driver.
Mother says truck lost control near St. Johns Heritage Parkway and Pace
Christina Jeffrey said she was driving with her youngest daughter when the truck spun out and hit them. The crash happened off St. Johns Heritage Parkway at Pace, a spot that has become a concern for residents as the area grows.
Jeffrey said the force of the collision was severe enough to destroy the family’s vehicle. She also said the crash tore through a fence near the roadway.
The family says the incident has left both mother and daughter facing a long recovery. Brianna Jeffrey, who is 18, remains hospitalized after the injuries sustained in the wreck.
Hospital treatment included back surgery and a stay in intensive care
Brianna Jeffrey suffered a broken back and underwent emergency stomach surgery after the crash, according to her mother. Doctors later placed eight screws and two rods in her back to stabilize the fracture.
The family expects her to move out of the ICU soon, though her recovery is still far from over. Her mother said the medical response and surgery have been necessary to address the trauma from the collision.
Jeffrey’s condition has also created a major financial strain. Her family said she and her mother will both be out of work for an extended period while they recover.
Palm Bay police cited the driver but have not filed charges
A Palm Bay police spokesperson said officers cited the driver responsible for the crash for reckless driving. Police did not name the driver.
No criminal charges have been filed, and officials have not said whether more action is expected. The citation is the only enforcement step described so far.
Investigators have also not publicly detailed exactly why the truck lost control. The circumstances remain centered on the family’s account of the vehicle fishtailing before the impact.
Parents have pressed for changes as traffic grows on the corridor
Jeffrey said she and other parents have been asking Palm Bay officials for years to improve St. Johns Heritage Parkway. She said new neighborhoods and businesses have brought more traffic to the road than it was built to handle.
She described the corridor as one that has not kept pace with the area’s growth. In her view, the increase in homes and businesses has created a roadway that is struggling under the added volume.
Jeffrey said the crash underscores what local families have been warning about. Her comments focused on road conditions, population growth and the need for upgrades in the area.
Family fundraising as recovery brings medical and work costs
With Brianna in the hospital and her mother also recovering, the family is trying to cover the costs that follow the crash. They have started fundraising to help with expenses tied to treatment and time away from work.
The recovery is expected to take time, and the family says the financial impact will last beyond the hospital stay. Medical bills, lost income and other expenses have added pressure after the wreck.
Jeffrey said her daughter is young and has her whole life ahead of her. For the family, the focus now is on recovery, stability and getting through the weeks ahead after a crash that left lasting injuries.
