DAVENPORT, FL — A 14-year-old boy died Thursday evening after an SUV struck him in Davenport, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said the crash happened near US-27 and McFee Drive in the Four Corners area, and they responded shortly before 8 p.m.
The teen lived in the area and was a ninth-grade student at Davenport High School, the sheriff’s office said. He was riding a NIU Kick electric scooter when the collision happened.
Deputies say the Ford Explorer had a green light before the crash
Investigators said a 2026 Ford Explorer was traveling north on US-27 when it moved through the McFee Drive intersection while the signal was green. At the same time, the boy was crossing in the crosswalk and entered the vehicle’s path.
The sheriff’s office said the SUV was headed through the intersection legally based on the traffic signal at the time. Deputies did not describe any immediate traffic violations by the driver in the initial release.
Driver stayed at the scene after the collision
The driver was identified only as a 38-year-old Orlando man. Deputies said he remained at the scene after the crash, which is a key part of the early investigation.
Officials have not said whether anyone else was hurt. The sheriff’s office also has not released additional details about the moments immediately before impact, beyond the fact that both the scooter rider and the SUV were in the intersection area at the same time.
Polk County detectives say no charges are expected right now
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said no charges are expected at this time. Even so, the crash remains under investigation as detectives continue to review how the collision unfolded.
That means investigators are still working to determine all of the circumstances surrounding the death, including how the scooter rider entered the crosswalk and how the SUV arrived at the intersection. Authorities have not announced any final findings.
US-27 and McFee Drive is a busy Four Corners intersection
The crash happened in the Four Corners area, where US-27 serves as a major roadway through the region. McFee Drive intersects the highway near Davenport High School, placing the scene in a heavily traveled part of Polk County.
