BUTLER, PA — Pennsylvania State Police are investigating after a 38-year-old truck driver was shot multiple times early Thursday while he was hitching up a tractor-trailer in Butler County.
The man contacted troopers at 3:47 a.m. from a parking lot in Allegheny Township, according to state police. He told investigators the shooting happened in the 3800 block of Onieda Valley Road.
Police said the driver did not know who shot him. He was taken to a hospital, but troopers have not released an update on his condition.
Driver called police from Allegheny Township parking lot
According to state police, the call came in before dawn from a parking lot where the driver had been working on his rig. The shooting happened as he was hooking up the tractor-trailer, a detail that suggests the attack occurred during routine work rather than in a confrontation the victim recognized.
The driver was identified by police only as a 38-year-old man. Troopers did not release his name, and no additional description of the suspect was provided.
The location given by investigators was the 3800 block of Onieda Valley Road in Allegheny Township, a rural area in Butler County.
No suspect identified in shooting
State police said the driver told them he did not know the person who opened fire. That leaves investigators with few public details about who may be responsible or what led up to the shooting.
No weapon description, suspect vehicle or motive has been released. Troopers also have not said whether they believe the shooting was targeted or random.
The lack of public information underscores how early the investigation remains. For now, police have only confirmed that multiple shots were fired and that the driver survived long enough to call for help.
Police say there is no known threat to the public
In a statement, state police said there is no known threat to the public at this time. That assurance came as investigators continued gathering information from the parking lot and from the wounded driver.
Troopers said the investigation remains ongoing, and they are asking anyone with information to contact the Butler State Police Barracks at 724-284-8100.
Police did not say whether anyone else was present when the shooting occurred. They also have not released whether surveillance cameras or nearby witnesses may be part of the case.
Hospital treatment and unanswered questions about his condition
After the shooting, the truck driver was transported to a hospital, but state police have not provided an update on how badly he was hurt. That makes the case one of several details still unknown as investigators work to piece together the timeline.
The early morning call, the parking lot setting and the victim’s statement that he did not know the shooter are the main facts police have made public so far. Beyond that, troopers have not described the extent of his injuries.
Until more information is released, the condition of the driver and the circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear.
How investigators are asking the public to help
State police are urging anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Butler State Police Barracks. Investigators have not said what specific tip could help most, but even small details about the area, vehicles or people near the parking lot could matter.
The barracks phone number, 724-284-8100, was included in the statement released by police. Troopers said they continue to work the case and have not announced any arrests.
For now, the investigation centers on a single violent encounter in a parking lot, with police trying to determine who fired the shots and why.
