BRADY TOWNSHIP, PA — A crash between a car and a box truck turned deadly Tuesday afternoon in Butler County, leaving one driver dead, another hurt and part of Route 8 closed near the impact site.
Pennsylvania State Police said the car entered the roadway without stopping at a stop sign and was struck by the northbound truck. The collision also brought down a pole, adding to the disruption along the busy corridor.
Emergency crews and aerial video from the scene showed the truck lying on its side with debris spread across the area. Police identified the car’s driver as Helen D. Schubert, 98, of West Sunbury.
How the collision unfolded at William Flinn Highway and Duffy Road
State police said the crash happened where Duffy Road meets William Flinn Highway, a stretch of Route 8 in Brady Township. According to investigators, the car was traveling west on Duffy Road when it failed to stop at the sign and pulled into the path of the truck.
The truck was headed north on Route 8 at the time of the impact. Police said the box truck struck the car after it entered the roadway, setting off the chain of events that left the truck on its side and damaged a pole nearby.
The location is a key connection point in the township, and the crash forced a closure in part of the route while responders worked the scene.
Helen D. Schubert identified as the driver who died
Police said the driver of the car died in the crash. They identified her as Helen D. Schubert, who was 98 years old and lived in West Sunbury.
Authorities did not immediately release additional information about her or say whether anyone else was in the car. The fatality turned the collision into a major response for state police and local crews.
Because the crash involved a pole and a truck that tipped onto its side, responders had to manage both the wreckage and the road closure at the same time.
Truck driver reported minor injuries after the impact
State police said the driver of the box truck suffered minor injuries. No further details about that driver’s condition were released.
The aerial view from Sky 4 showed shredded paper scattered along the road, suggesting the truck’s cargo spilled across the scene after the collision. The truck itself could be seen on its side, which likely complicated cleanup and traffic control.
Police did not say how long the truck driver remained at the scene or whether the injuries required hospital treatment. They also did not say whether any other vehicles were involved.
Route 8 closure affected traffic in Brady Township
The wreck shut down part of Route 8 Tuesday afternoon as investigators and road crews worked in the area. The closure came near William Flinn Highway and Duffy Road, where the crash happened just before noon.
With a pole knocked out and a commercial truck overturned, the scene had to be secured before traffic could move normally again. That type of crash can also create hazards from downed infrastructure and spilled cargo, both of which were visible in aerial footage.
