The wrestling season has begun here at Greer High. We are excited. Hoping for a better outcome than last year, Greer High has a strong senior leader: Alex Gomez, who made state last year for the first time. He is returning as a senior and a captain. He has opened the season 32-1 dominating the competition as he looks to return to state this year. Another returner is Bradley Alexander who just committed to the University of Brewton-Parker located in the state of Georgia. The one thing that always stands out to me at Greer high in the male dominated sport is the several girls participating in it. Jillian Lackey is one of our lady jackets returning to the wrestling team this year. She hopes to improve her record as last year. She says “Most of the guys from other schools that I compete against think that because I’m a girl I can’t wrestle and they think I’m an easy win. They come into the match with a lot of confidence. So it always feels good to win against those same guys.” Jillian is also motivated by the positive feedback from supporters near and far. Jillian says, “Having younger kids, parents, and little girls from other schools coming up to me hugging me telling me how great I did and how I’ve inspired them throughout the season really motivates me to continue to do what I’ve been doing.” The Yellow Jackets record is 14-8 as the team looks forward to facing Eastside at home and other individuals are getting ready for Greenville County Regionals.
