GREER— The wrestling team at Greer High School has a full line up of thirty high school students in addition to a handful of middle schoolers. The wrestling team practices every day after school and travels to tournaments on the weekends. They will compete in fourteen different weight classes.
Senior and Captain Avery Porter has wrestled for seven years when asked why he competes in this field he said ¨I do it because it relieves a huge amount of stress for me and it truly makes me happy. Stepping on the mat and wrestling allows me to be at peace no matter what I may be going through in life. I´m always able to leave it all alone when I wrestle. The bonds that I’ve built while wrestling I can never forget. Wrestling has helped me in every aspect of my life and for anyone that truly loves wrestling it should be everything but just a sport.¨
Juniors Andrew McCullough, Micah Henken. and Ellison Flores are also captains of the 2019 season. Matches are held all across South Carolina. There are also two day tournaments Friday through Saturday. Duels are held every week.
While interviewing Avery Porter he later added ¨This is our team’s biggest season yet, with multiple matches every week it truly is an everyday sport.¨
The first tournament of the season is at Woodmont High School on November 30 through December first. It is only five dollars to witness this exciting sport. On December the fifth Greer High School will be hosting its own tournament where competitors from Greenville, Daniel, Gaffney, Chapman, and Southside will face off. Come out and show your support for your Greer High wrestling team.
