GREER — As people are looking for a healthier lifestyle, many people turn towards eating differently. Some will try eating as a vegan or a vegetarian. A vegan is a person who does not eat or use animal products.

Eating as a vegan can be more than just a healthy lifestyle change. According to a nutrition journal study in 2012, vegan diets contain more “arachidonic acid” which can help perk your mood.

While people think vegans and vegetarians are similar, they are very much different. Vegetarian is just keeping meat out of your diet while vegan is not eating or even using animal products.

For example, a vegan would not eat honey because it is produced by bees. They key is to look for foods with the smallest amounts of ingredients such as guacamole.

The only cons of going vegan are you can quickly run out of vitamins such as B12 and iron. These vitamins would need to be obtained in other methods.

Some worry that it would be difficult to eat as a vegan in a world of restaurants and going out to eat. Don’t worry, restaurants are adjusting their menus so you won’t have to miss out on your favorite vegan meals. Panera Bread has a vegan menu.

So, the next time you are sitting for a meal; remember, animals are friends, not food.
