ABC Family “Hunts” for Perfect Show as “Shadowhunters” is Set to Premiere
January 4, 2016
On October 12, 2014, Constantin Film announced that they would be producing the show “Shadowhunters”, based off The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The show began filming in Toronto, Canada on May 25, 2015, and is set to premiere on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 on ABC Family (soon to be renamed Freeform).
“Shadowhunters” follows the story of a teenage girl named Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), who has fire red hair and a stubborn determination. After Clary’s mother (Maxim Ray) is abducted and her house overrun by demons, Clary uncovers a dark secret; she and her mother are Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids that hunt demons. Clary joins with a misfit band of other Shadowhunters in order to reclaim her mother’s life, and finds powers no one could have ever guessed she had.
Along with her “mundane” best friend Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende), her new Shadowhunter friends Isabelle and Alec Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia and Matthew Daddario) and a mysterious Shadowhunter named Jace (Dominic Sherwood), Clary sets off to free her mother from the grips of her abductor, a villainous Shadowhunter by the name of Valentine (Alan Van Sprang).
The first installment of The Mortal Instruments, City of Bones, was made into a movie in 2013, also by Constantin Film, but production of the second installment, City of Ashes, was cancelled after the first film failed to recoup its budget.
“It takes a lot of hours to tell a story properly,” the producer, Joseph ‘McG’ McGinty Nichol, said in an interview with Fashion & Style. “So fingers crossed on that. We still have a long way to go.”
“Shadowhunters” premieres on ABC Family (Freeform) on Tuesday, January 12 at 9 p.m.
