TRAVELERS REST — Even though the Greer High School Wrestling Team has been giving up points via forfeits in recent matches, those Yellow Jackets that wrestle are competing and keeping the team in the match.
This was the case Wednesday night as the Yellow Jackets fell to Travelers Rest and Daniel High Schools at Travelers Rest High School.
The Yellow Jackets (1-4) fell to the host Devildogs, 33-24, in the first match in a Region 2 Conference contest. Picking up wins for the Yellow Jackets were Freshman Ivan Pinel at 106 pounds, Freshman Avery Porter at 152 pounds, Sophomore Matthew Mason at 160 pounds and Senior Jordan Hawthorne at 285 pounds.
Pinel received a forfeit before Porter pinned his opponent in the second period. Mason pinned his opponent in the third period before Hawthorne remained undefeated with a first-period pin.
In the second match, the Yellow Jackets fell to the Lions, 38-30. Pinel picked up his second win via forfeit before Sophomore Gabriel Brown won by pin at the 138-pound weight class. Porter and Mason then won by forfeits before Hawthorne ran his season record to 10-0 with a pin in the first period.
Greer High School Wrestling Coach Coby Peeler was pleased how his team fought throughout the matches. “We got off to a slow start, unfortunately,” Peeler said. “When you are a young team, that can happen, but we can’t afford to start that way with as many open weight classes as we have. I thought our guys rallied and performed much better in the second match against Daniel.”
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Thursday night as they travel to Landrum High School to wrestle the host Cardinals and Whitmire High School. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
